Setting up scaffolding systems

Scaffolding system is a temporary structure that provides the required protection against any type of falls while executing construction or renovation related work at height. It can be used inside tall buildings but also outdoors, to make building and repairing easy.

In recent years, scaffolding sales have skyrocketed considerably, as they have become one of the main pre-requisites to perform various jobs in construction, whether it's building homes, offices, bridges or airports, among others. The use of scaffolding systems may differ from country to country. For example in Asian countries, bamboo scaffolds are still generally acceptable, while in Australia we & other European countries, Aluminum and steel scaffolding is a must, according to the guidelines and safety standards.

While setting up any scaffolding system on the site, there are strict guidelines that must be followed at all times. In Australia, these guidelines have been put in place by the Australian government to ensure maximum safety for its workers. Not just for installers, there are strict guidelines to be respected for manufacturers and suppliers of scaffolding materials too. Tubes, fittings, tips, scales, all that follows a particular standard. For example, AS / NZS 1576.2.2009 is a written standard for Australia coupling and scaffolding accessories, which are used in setting up a scaffolding system.

Based on the work to be performed on them and the load capacity, various scaffold platforms are classified as heavy, medium or light platforms. These are decided based on the following points:

·        For plastering, painting, electrical work and other light tasks, light scaffolding should be used and the load should not exceed 225 kg per rack.

·        General trades work such as construction maintenance, support-obligation SCAFFOLDING system should be used and the load should not exceed 450kg per bay.

·        To work as heavy plant maintenance, oil and gas terminal etc., heavy scaffolding should only be used and the load limit for each bay should not exceed more than 675 kg per bay.

No scaffolding system greater than 4 m in height, must be installed only by a government certified professionals and at any time, QC surveyors have the right to perform random checks on metal panels of tubes, wrenches, Scaffolding Equipment / viz in collaboration with various pin couplers, external carpenters etc., whenever necessary.

Apart from that, at any time, it is the responsibility of employers to provide a safe work environment and wellness facilities that falls under OH & S standards.
